Artist Research - Nicholas Hughes - In Darkness Visible.

Nicholas Hughes- In Darkness Visible.

If classification were to be forced upon these images, I’m not sure what they would fall into. The obvious answer would be Low Light Landscape Photography. But there seems to be more to Hughes photographs than there would be if they were forced in a box and labelled.

The colour that is used within the shoot creates an air of mystery that surrounds the photographs. Perhaps this is just the lighting that’s been used, but there seems to be a darker side to the images. Something in the images that you just can’t see. I’d like to just that the images reflect social satire within the context of relationships and memories. This is how I’m seeing the images. There like the faded memory of a distant friend, or a face that you just can’t picture anymore. The mist and fog in these images seem to hide the true meaning, and the green tint to most of the woodland shots portrays the mystery even more.

The shots of the water  are really interesting. It reminds me of old stories where monsters would hide in deep waters. Especially The lord of the rings and the chapter with the watcher of the water outside moria.
There’s a lot of empty space within these photographs. I really feel like its reflecting the loss of something, or the fading of a moment in life. These spaces entangled with the colour and tone of these images point to want to reflect this in my response.
