Artist Research - Melissa Fleming - Beyond the Visible

I find myself increasing troubled by the fact that i cant classify many of the images that i'm seeing. As a logical minded guy, these images, like some before them, just don't fit into boxes. Portrait,Landscape, neither really fit. Its like a really well Remixed song, it just doesn't really fit into any category.

What i love about these images, having experimented with night time photography before, is that the lighting is so fantastic. In the second image, the water is so clearly lit. At first i was wondering whether the water was lit from underneath, but that would of created a different effect entirely. I might look into this effect, perhaps using Adobe AE or Photoshop to create it, alternatively, i might create it by placing a lamp under some water.

There is nothing particularly complex in regards to the composition of these images. The simple presentation of the water in the forefront of every shot gives way to the deeper meaning behind the images. The color of the images is ,muted due the fact that its shot at night, which as well i feel like gives way to the deeper meaning.

Flemming is quoted about the work "The natural world has always inspired my work. Long intrigued by its processes, I have come to value that nature’s more subtle and interesting beauty is often beyond the visible. As such, most of my work is an investigation of the transient and often unseen aspects of the natural world.

Waves visualize the power of the ocean and in the black void of night the swirls of white in Sentient hint at that unseen energy we know in our minds to be present."

I feel like this reflects my theme really well, what is it about our minds that deals with idea's the energy, the growth of it.

I looking at using a set of florescent lights to create a similar looking effect on the water, long exposure shots on the water with a large amount of light poured onto the surface, in order to illuminate the scene.
